The tools that actually work, in the order to use them
Let's clear one thing up before the tools: gambling is not a way to make money. Every game on every site we list pays out less than it takes in over time — that is how the operators stay in business. Spend only what you would happily spend on any other night out, and treat any win as luck, not skill or income.
Before you play: set the limits while you're calm
- Deposit limits. Every UK-licensed casino must offer them. Set daily, weekly and monthly caps during signup — by law, lowering a limit takes effect immediately, while raising one carries a 24-hour delay precisely so you cannot do it on impulse.
- Bank-level gambling blocks. Monzo, Starling, Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds and most other UK banks can block gambling transactions on your card from the app, usually with a 48-hour or 72-hour cooling-off period before the block can be lifted. This works even on sites that behave badly.
- Time-outs. Operators must offer breaks from 24 hours up to six weeks. Shorter and easier than full self-exclusion when you just need a pause.
If it has stopped being fun
- GAMSTOP excludes you from every UK-licensed gambling website at once — six months, one year or five years, and it cannot be undone early. Registration takes about five minutes at gamstop.co.uk.
- The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free, confidential, and open 24 hours every day. It is run by GamCare, a charity — not by the gambling industry's marketing departments.
- NHS gambling clinics now operate across England and Scotland, with referral routes through GambleAware. Treatment is free.

Chasing losses, hiding stakes from people close to you, gambling with money set aside for bills, or feeling restless when you try to stop — any one of these is reason enough to use the tools above. You do not need to wait until it is “bad enough”; the helpline takes calls from people who just want to check in.
